Why I do this
I grew up an athlete, and chiropractors helped me out a lot when I was hurt, so I’d been interested in this since I was an early teen. Coming out of undergrad I knew I wanted to be in healthcare, and it came down to two paths: chiropractic, or the molecular-nutrition route — working in a lab on medications. As much as I liked microbiology, I wanted the hands-on, whole-person side of it, working with people instead of samples. I was about 22 when I knew for sure.
How I work
In the first ten minutes I’m listening for three things: what your pain is, where it is, and which motions or activities bring it on. That tells me where the problem is most likely coming from and how I’d treat it — and just as important, it tells me what matters to you functionally, not just getting out of pain. Then I look: how you move, what’s tight, what’s weak, what reproduces it. You’ll hear what I think is going on in plain English, including what I’m not sure about.
I won’t tell you what you need before the exam, because I don’t know yet. Give me the time to go over it and to hear your concerns, and then I’ll explain the options. If you’ve never been adjusted and the idea of being “cracked” worries you, say so — you don’t need the big adjustment to get help. Sometimes it’s the thing that would help you most, and I’ll tell you that, but there are other ways to treat the same problem and the choice is yours. And if I can’t be the one to help you, I’ll say that too: when an emergency room is the better idea, or when a couple of rounds of care haven’t improved things at the rate I’d expect, I refer you to someone who can. If I can’t help you, I at least want to point you in the right direction.
Who I especially enjoy working with
Athletes and pregnant women — that’s an easy answer. Athletes are usually more motivated than most people to get better, and I rarely have to worry about them sticking with the plan. Pregnant women are some of the most thankful patients I have, and care during and after pregnancy is gentle, modified, and coordinated with your OB.
